Prof. Peter O’ Connor - Director

Prof. Peter O’Connor is an FTICR mass spectrometry expert with extensive experience at advanced mass spectrometry of proteins, peptides, polymers, and glycans and considerable experience with lipids, small molecules, and complex mixtures. He is also an expert at both operation and analysis of tandem mass spectrometry experiments using a wide range of fragmentation techniques, including CID, IRMPD, ExD, and UVPD and has a keen understanding of the fragmentation mechanisms in each case which is critical knowledge needed to use the MS/MS fragment ion mass information to determine chemical structures. Prof. O’Connor worked for a decade with Prof. Catherine Costello, helping to run her mass spectrometry facility and did his PhD with Prof. Fred W. McLafferty at Cornell University in 1995.

Dr. Mark Barrow - Co- Director (Unofficial)

Dr. Mark Barrow is an FTICR expert as well and also an expert in complex mixture analysis with particular expertise in petroleum and extremely complex environmental sample analysis using exact mass elemental composition analysis. He has added expertise in methodologies and procedures to computationally and statistically analyse such extremely complex datasets and extract usable chemical knowledge from them.

Dr. Meng Li - Manager

Dr. Meng (Anna) Li is also an FTICR mass spectrometry expert with experience in top-down protein analysis, proteomics, small molecule and lipid analysis, glycan analysis, and some complex mixture analysis. She set up and developed the protocols for UVPD and ExD on the 15T FTICR mass spectrometer in the AMS-RTP and also is working to develop the IRMPD protocols. She’s already an expert in CID analysis. Dr. Li did her PhD at Warwick with Prof. Peter O’Connor followed by a postdoc here and therefore has almost 10 years of experience with the instrumentation in the AMS-RTP.
