Justin Knowles worked first as an advertising executive. Although he had no formal art training himself, from 1966 he taught at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham. A Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Society, he originally collected tribal art from East and West Africa. He was included in The New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel in 1966. From 'shaped' canvases he moved on into metal sculpture. He lived and worked in Devon from 1966.
Solo exhibitions include Plymouth City Art Gallery in 1967 and a retrospective there in 2003.
