Moelwyn Merchant

Born 1913, Port Talbot,Glamorgan, Wales.  Died 1997, Leamington Spa,Warwickshire

Moelwyn Merchant studied English and History at University College Cardiff.  He taught at Carmarthen Grammar School in the 1930s and was ordained in 1940.  He was Professor of English at the University of Exeter from 1961-74, Willett Professor at the University of Chicago and Canon and Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral from 1967-71. 

A friend of Graham Sutherland, Josef Herman and John Piper, he began sculpting under the guidance and encouragement of another friend, Barbara Hepworth in 1964. His work was included in the exhibition Prophecy and Vision, at Arnolfini, Bristol and Camden Arts Centre in 1983 and a comprehensive retrospective was organised by Clwyd County Arts and Exhibitions Service and toured by the Welsh Arts Council in 1985. He published his autobiography Fragments of a Life in 1990.

Eton College holds the archive of his correspondence and writings.
