Spin-out company Cambridge CMOS Sensors Ltd was a runner-up in this year’s British Engineering Excellence Awards and was highly commended by the competition’s judges.

The company, nominated for ‘Start-up of the Year’ in the awards, is developing innovative gas-sensing technology, that can be used in a range of residential, commercial and academic applications, including gas detectors, industrial safety, explosive detection and medical diagnostics.

Warwick Ventures helped launch the company in 2008, as a spin-out from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering and with licensed technology from the University of Warwick.

The winners of this year’s awards were revealed on Thursday 13 October at the Globe Theatre in London. Some 200 people from the UK’s engineering community gathered to recognize the achievements of all shortlisted organisations.

Cambridge CMOS sensors was pipped at the post by NEUL, an innovative wireless network developer. Other companies on the shortlist included Redtail Telematics, a manufacturer of fleet management products, and engineering design company TBS Cubed.
