Add a multi-line text box to a form

Use the multi-line text box to enable respondents to type longer free text answers or comments.

  1. Browse to the form you want to edit.

  2. Go to Edit > Edit formsbuilder page:

The SiteBuilder 'Edit' menu, with the 'Edit formsbuilder page' option highlighted

Alternatively, select the Edit this form button at the top of the form:

The 'Edit this form' button at the top of a SiteBuilder form page

  3. Under Add a text box, select Multi-line text box:

The 'Add a text box' menu, with the 'Multi-line text box' option highlighted

  4. You see the Add/Edit a multi-line text box screen:

The options for a multi line text box

  5. In the Field name box, enter the name you want to appear as the column heading in the form submissions table. For example:

    Name

In the Label box, enter the question or instructions to show the respondent on the form – for example:

    Your name

If you don't specify a Label, the Field name displays on the form instead.

  6. Choose a Width of the text box as a percentage of the page width. For example, 100% spans the entire page.

  7. Optionally, set the number of Rows to display in the text box.

  8. Optionally, in the Character limit box, enter the maximum number of characters (up to 4,000) a respondent can type in the multi-line text box.

  9. Optionally, in the Prefilled text box, enter a hint or example answer to help the respondent understand the information you're asking for. This text appears in the text box when the form loads.

  10. By default, the Label displays to the left of the text box. If you'd like to display the Label on top, select that checkbox.

  11. Optionally, to display text for information only, select Read-only.

  12. To make the multi-line text box mandatory – meaning the respondent must enter text before they can submit the form – select Required.

  13. To show the multi-line text box only to editors of submissions – and hide it from respondents – select Only visible to editors.

  14. When you're finished configuring the question, select Save.
