Add a textbox question to a quiz

The Text box question type asks participants to enter a short text answer.

  1. Browse to your quiz page.

  2. Go to Edit > Edit quizbuilder page:

The SiteBuilder 'Edit' menu, with the 'Edit quizbuilder page' option highlighted

Alternatively, select the Edit this quiz button at the top of the page:

The 'Edit quiz' button at the top of a quiz page

  3. You see the Edit quiz screen:

    The 'Edit quiz' screen

  4. Under Add a question, select Textbox:

The 'Add a question' menu, with the 'Textbox' option highlighted

  5. SiteBuilder displays the Add/Edit a textbox screen:

    The 'Add/Edit a textbox' screen

  6. In the Question name box, enter a name to help you identify the question in submissions – for example, Weekday. Participants do not see this on the quiz - it's purely for your reference.

  7. Enter the question the participant will see in the Question box.

  8. Enter the Correct answer.

    Tip: Encourage the correct answer!

Text questions can be challenging to write because they only work when you can predict reasonable responses. For example, ‘Name a day of the week that starts with T’ is a poor question because the answer can be ‘Tuesday’ or ‘Thursday’. A better question would be ‘Name a day of the week which begins with W’ because there is one correct answer.

However, you can reasonably expect a participant to enter ‘Wednesday’, ‘Weds’ or ‘Wed’. To accept possible synonyms for an answer, enter them in the Correct answer box separated by the pipe character |:

    Wednesday|Wed|Weds

Selecting the options in the following steps can increase the chance of a participant's answer being accepted as correct.

  9. Optionally, select Ignore case to accept answers regardless of capitalisation. We recommend that you select this checkbox unless the answer specifically requires upper-case letters.

  10. Select Strip punctuation if you want to remove commas, apostrophes, hyphens, full stops and quotation marks (single and double) from submitted answers. For example, if this option is selected, the answer Wed. is accepted, even if the Correct answer is specified as Wed.

  11. Optionally, choose whether to Ignore order for answers. For example, if you ask

What two days of the week begin with T?

and select Ignore order, the answers Tuesday Thursday and Thursday Tuesday are both accepted.

  12. Optionally, enter any Feedback for correct answer or Feedback for wrong answer, which will be displayed to a participant when they submit the quiz.

  13. Select Save to return to the Edit quiz screen.

  14. When you're finished editing your quiz, select Done.
