Project Management Tools for Managing Your Research Project

Aim of the session:

The aim of this session is to equip researchers with project management tools and techniques to help with the day-to-day running of research projects. Participants will be introduced to some hands-on practical tools and tried-and-tested approaches for successfully implementing, managing, and tracking your project plan.

What will I learn?

By the end of this 1-day onsite course, participants will have:

  • Reviewed and critiqued a research project plan, reflecting on the concepts of best practice in project planning.
  • Applied core PM scheduling tools and techniques to a case study to create a manageable day-to-day plan for research projects.
  • Adjusted the plan to reflect and accommodate the impact of changes during project execution.
  • Considered resourcing and responsibility assignment in a project Learned methods for monitoring and tracking multiple research projects using shared resources.
  • Been introduced to ways that software can help with day-to-day tracking and ongoing report for research projects.

Is it right for me?

This is aimed at researchers who are already managing a research project, and who may have some previous experience of project management.

Less useful if…

This course is less useful if you are planning a funding bid and have limited direct experience of managing research projects.

This course builds on the introductory Project Planning your Research, and although not compulsory we do recommend it as a pre-requisite to get most value from this session.

Learning Hours:

This course takes approximately 7 learning hours. This includes any pre-course/programme work, attendance at workshops, experiential (‘on-the’job’) learning, coaching and post-course/programme work.
