Beginners

Improve your water confidence and begin learning the three main strokes with this course designed for those who are new to swimming or have very minimal experience. Female only sessions available.

What you'll learn

  • Learn the mechanics of swimming in a friendly environment
  • You'll be gradually introduced to frontcrawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • Each week will focus on a particular element of the 'BLABT' framework to progress swimming ability - body position, legs, arms, breathing, timing

Sample lesson

Warm up (15 minutes)
Explanation of session, breathing practice on the wall, working on confidence exhaling into the water and submerging face, and breathing in on top of the surface of the water. Building into stationary kick on the wall with a woggle working body position.
Main set (20 minutes)
Using a kickboard or with other flotation devices to aid stability, working on improving flutter leg kick - long legs bending from hips with floppy ankles and pointed toes. Individual and group feedback on how to improve technique. Plenty of rest to ensure good technique.
Progression (10 minutes)
Maintaining good strong technique, body position and breathing practice, and introducing in slow, controlled, long arms (perhaps with assistance from flotation devices, but progressing away from using these aids as confidence grows).
Contrasting activity (15 minutes)
Floats: star floats, pencil floats, on front and back, with a partner or individually, improving confidence and feel for body position in the water.
