Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of a family of nanomaterials that have been studied widely since their discovery nearly two decades ago. Their outstanding thermal, mechanical and chemical properties, nanometre size and large current-carrying capacity (per unit cross-section) make them attractive for many applications. Researchers have already successfully demonstrated the use of both a single CNT (for example, in electronic devices, and as a field emitter) and multiple CNTs (for example, in chemical and flow sensing). Because of the material's exciting properties and possible applications, many experts believe that CNTs could in the future even replace not only silicon but also interconnect materials in microelectronic devices.
