Academic Research and Communication Skills
This module develops the academic language, literacy, and research skills needed for success in UK higher education. Students will practise reading, writing, listening, and speaking in academic contexts, learning how to structure arguments, present ideas clearly, and communicate effectively in written and spoken formats. The module also introduces critical academic practices such as evaluating sources, engaging in inquiry-based research, and reflecting on learning. Through teamwork and a research-based project, students apply these skills to authentic academic tasks. By the end of the module, students will be able to plan, produce, and present structured academic work, collaborate effectively with others, and demonstrate the independent study skills required for undergraduate success.
Foundations of Economics
This module introduces the fundamental concepts and tools of economics, equipping students to analyse complex economic problems. It emphasises the use of models to explain and evaluate real-world issues, while also considering alternative viewpoints and assumptions within economic theory. Students will gain an understanding of the intuition behind mathematical models and their application to microeconomics and macroeconomics, building a foundation for advanced study in these areas. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply basic economic models, compare different economic perspectives, and use theoretical tools to analyse key economic issues.
Foundations of Management
This module introduces the core functions and principles of business, providing students with a broad understanding of how organisations operate in dynamic environments. It examines the key internal and external factors that influence business decision-making, including economic, social, technological, and ethical considerations. Students will explore the major functional areas of business—management, human resources, operations and marketing—while considering how these interact to achieve organisational goals. Particular attention is given to organisational behaviour, focusing on teamwork, motivation, and leadership, as well as to marketing principles and the development of effective business strategies. By the end of the module, students will be able to analyse the factors shaping business performance, explain the roles of different functional areas, and apply key concepts to practical case studies.
Foundations of Business Law & Finance
This module introduces students to Business Law and Finance, two essential aspects of business operations. The Business Law component explores the legal frameworks that shape business activity, including types of business structures, basic principles of contract law, and the responsibilities of businesses and individuals under the law. The Finance component focuses on how businesses raise funds, make financial decisions, and assess their financial performance. Together, these areas provide a well-rounded introduction to the legal and financial dimensions of business. By the end of the module, students will be able to explain key legal principles relevant to business, apply basic financial concepts, and evaluate how law and finance influence business decision-making.
