Your immigration permission should always reflect the main reason for you being in the UK and should be appropriate for your course of study.

You are permitted to study if you hold one of these visas, however, you should read the risks and restrictions for studying using one of these visas.

What is a temporary travel visa?

It is in the form of a sticker (vignette) in your passport and allows you to enter the UK and collect your BRP card.

A temporary travel visa is currently valid for 90 days and is issued when you apply for a UK visa from overseas for more than 6 months. If your vignette has been issued for longer than 90 days (or for the full length course the course) then this is an error, please see: Check and correct an error on your student visa (or BRP)Link opens in a new window.

What is the difference between a Student visa and a Temporary Travel Visa and which one should I choose when completing the online course registration?

If you have applied for your Student visa from overseas, that is outside of UK, and your course is more than 6 months in duration, you will receive a Temporary Travel Visa - which is in the form of a paper sticker (vignette) inside your Passport.

This is the visa type you should select from the drop-down menu when you complete you online course registration: Temporary Travel Visa.

When you arrive in the UK you should collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) card.

Your Home Office Decision Letter should state where you should collect your BRP card from.

The BRP is your Student visa - Please note that you will only have a BRP if you will study a course which is 6 months or longer in duration.

If you selected to have your BRP sent to Warwick, you will receive an email from us when this is received which will contain information on how and where to collect this.

If you do not have your BRP card at the point of completing the online course registration, you should only provide the Temporary Travel Visa and Passport details.

If you do have your BRP card at the point of completing online course registration then you should provide this as well and select Warwick Student visa from the drop-down menu.

Please note that if you apply for your Student visa from inside the UK you will not have a Temporary Travel Visa, only a BRP card, which is your Student visa.

In case you only come to the UK to study a course which is less than 6 months in duration, you will not have a BRP card, but only a Student visa Entry Travel Vignette sticker in your Passport - this is your visa.

Can I complete online enrolment using the temporary travel visa?

Yes you can.

A temporary travel visa is currently valid for 90 days and is in the form of a sticker in your passport to allow you to enter the UK where you will collect your BRP card.

You should choose the ‘Warwick Student Temporary Travel visa’ option from the list of available visa options on the visa page.

Where it asks for your visa number, enter the number in the top right hand corner of the travel vignette (visa sticker) and give the validity dates as the start and end date of the travel visa.

I have tried to complete online course registration using my Temporary Travel visa but get a message to say my CAS is not recognised as Used, what can I do?

This is likely to be down to an error made by the Home Office.

When they process your application and make a decision, they should change your CAS status from 'Assigned' to 'Used'.

Sometimes, they fail to make this change, which in turn will prevent you from completing online course registration.

Do not worry, we will be able to resolve the issue for you and you will be able to complete your course registration. Please complete the enrolment query form found at the bottom of this web page and upload a copy of your Temporary Travel Visa.

Can I become fully enrolled and collect my Warwick ID card with only the temporary travel visa?

Yes, if your temporary travel visa is still valid.

You can complete online course registration using your temporary travel visa, and we would encourage you to do this in order to avoid delays later on.

You will only be able to complete the enrolment process, once we have copies of all of your immigration documents.

You will be able to collect your Warwick ID card as soon as you arrive on campus.

If your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) contained an Alternative Collection Location (ACL) code for Warwick, and you used this in your visa application, then your BRP card should be delivered to the University of Warwick for you to collect during your Right to Study document check event.

You will receive an email from the Immigration and Compliance Team regarding arrangements for your BRP.

If you did not use the ACL code then you will need to collect your BRP card from the UK Post Office branch stated in your Home Office decision letter within 10 working days of your arrival in the UK. YOU MUST COMPLETE ANY PERIOD OF SELF-ISOLATION PRIOR TO COLLECTING YOUR BRP - THE HOME OFFICE HAVE CONFIRMED IF THIS TAKES YOU OVER THE 10 DAY DEADLINE THIS IS FINE.

Once you have collected it from the Post Office, you must upload a scan of the front and back of your BRP card using the online course registration form, within 12 calendar days of arriving in the UK. However, please be aware that you must complete any period of self-isolation prior to collecting your BRP.

You should be aware that, in some circumstances, such as if you fail to progress, withdraw from your course or change institution, the University will be unable to continue sponsoring you and your student visa will be curtailed.

The student visa is linked to both the institution (Warwick) and the course originally stated on your CAS.

If your current Warwick student visa was granted for you to study on a previous course, you will need to apply for a new Warwick student visa within 6 weeks of the date of enrolment, or before your leave expires (whichever is the earliest).

If you enrolled on this basis, you should have already met with an International Student Adviser and we will monitor and ensure that you submit your visa application before the deadline.

Following the same principle, if at some point during your studies you decide to study a different course at Warwick, or make changes to your course, you may need to apply for a new student visa and in some cases this will need to be done from overseas. Please refer to our website for further information.

If your student visa application is currently pending approval by the Home Office, you need to be aware that any changes to your course, or your circumstances, will need to be communicated to the Home Office via the University.

Should an in-progress visa application be unsuccessful and you do not hold a visa which permits you to study at Warwick you will be required to withdraw under University regulation 36.4.2Link opens in a new window.

You should notify us immediately if you become aware that your visa has been refused so that we can assist you further.

While you are sponsored by the University of Warwick for your student visa, you must adhere to your student visa responsibilities.

Failure to comply with your responsibilities, breaching the conditions of your immigration permission or failure to act in accordance with UK law, may result in the University using its discretion to withdraw student visa sponsorship from you under University Regulation 36.4.3.

I have a Student visa/Tier 4 issued for study at another UK University which is still valid, can I enrol and use this visa to study at Warwick?

No! you cannot enrol, only students holding Student visas applied for using a CAS issued by Warwick may complete online enrolment.

If you are in the UK, you will need to have submitted a new visa application using a Warwick CAS and uploaded evidence of an in-time application, or, have received your new Warwick visa, before you can complete online course registration.

You will not be permitted to study at Warwick using a Student visa or Tier 4 visa issued for another University.

I hold a Student visa or Tier 4 visa which is sponsored by another university but wish to take a part-time course at Warwick alongside my current studies, how do I complete enrolment?

You should select ‘Non-Warwick Student visa’ visa and upload a copy of your current passport and visa (or BRP card).

Your part-time course at Warwick will be considered as a ‘supplementary course’.

You will also need to provide evidence of your continued enrolment with your main educational sponsor (that it, the institution that assigned the CAS used to obtain your current Student/Tier 4 visa); for more information about this, please contact the Immigration Service at Warwick

Can I undertake supplementary study at Warwick while also enrolled on a course at another UK University?

Yes, it is possible to undertake supplementary study at Warwick while fully enrolled at another University if:

• You will not require additional time to complete your main course as a result of supplementary study at Warwick
• Your supplementary study at Warwick will not delay your original departure from the UK
• You are still fully registered with your HEI/Tier 4 sponsor and they have no objection to your undertaking additional study at Warwick

If you will be undertaking supplementary study at Warwick using a Student visa/Tier 4 visa issued for a course at another UK University, you will need to provide written confirmation of the above details from your HEI/Tier 4 sponsor University before you can enrol at Warwick.

When enrolling online you will be asked to provide a copy of your passport and visa; at this point you can also upload the support letter.

Can I enrol at Warwick as a visiting PhD researcher using a Student visa/Tier 4 visa sponsored by another UK University?

Yes, for a period of 6 months or fewer if approved by both Warwick and your HEI/Tier 4 sponsor University. In exceptional circumstances a visiting period of up to 1 year can be considered.

You may enrol at Warwick as a visiting research student while being sponsored by another UK university if:

• You will spend fewer than 6 months at Warwick (or up to 1 year if agreed beforehand)
• You continue to be monitored by your current student visa sponsor
• Your sponsor agrees to the arrangement and provides written confirmation of the same, including confirmation that a 'change of study location' report has been/ will be made to the UKVI to facilitate this

You will first need to contact the Student Immigration & Compliance Team and provide a copy of the written confirmation from your current sponsor confirming the above 3 points - this letter is usually issued by the Student Visa advisory service or the Student Visa compliance team of your University.

If we agree that you can enrol at Warwick on this basis, we will re-set your enrolment record and advise you what visa type to select.

When enrolling online you will be asked to provide a copy of your passport and visa; at this point you will also need to upload the approved written confirmation from your sponsor University.

This visa permits a short-period of study in the UK. If you applied for this visa before 1 December 2020, it may be used for a period of study-abroad/exchange/visiting research at Warwick, re-sitting examinations, attending short courses or participation in distance learning course where no period of study in the UK exceeds six months and where the periods of study could not be considered to be too ‘frequent or successive’. It is not an appropriate visa for full-time study on a course which is UK based and longer than six months in duration (or 11 months for English language courses where stated).

If you applied for this visa before 1 December 2020, your intended visit period is less than 6 months and you are granted a visa for 6 months you should leave the UK within 30 days after your course end date, or your visa expiry date, whichever is sooner. Staying in the UK more than 30 days beyond the visit date stated in your original visa application could be viewed by the Home Office as a breach of visa conditions and may lead to future visa applications being refused.

If you applied for this visa on or after 1 December 2020, you will only be able to study an English language course which is between 6 - 11 months in the UK, and you must intend to leave the UK within 30 days of the end of their English language course, or at the end of 11 months, whichever is sooner.

Whilst holding this visa, it is not possible to have dependant family members in the UK, to switch to a Student Visa or to extend this visa in the UK. Work (including on a work placement or work experience) is not permitted and you are unable to claim public funds.

I am a non-visa national coming to study for less than 6 months and will come to the UK using my passport (not apply for visa application)

what should I enter on the visa screen when enrolling online?

You should select 'Standard Visitor Visa' option from the list of available visa types.

For visa number, please type APPLY FOR ON ARRIVAL, for the visa start date use your course start date or the date you intend to arrive in the UK and for the visa end date, add six months.

Please upload a scan of your passport data page and invitation letter in lieu of your visa stamp which you will not have yet.

We will be unable to complete your enrolment at the University until you upload a copy of the visa stamp inside your passport. You can do this through the enrolment dashboard once you have entered the UK.

I am a non-visa national coming to study for more than 6 months can I start my course being on visit visa and then switch to student?

No, the Immigration Rules state that visitors, including non-visa nationals, must not intend to study for a period of more than 6 months.

The University therefore reserves the right to prevent students holding visitor visas from enrolling on programmes of more than 6 months duration.

In addition, it is not possible to switch from a visitor visa into student visa inside the UK.

I have visitor visa but the online course registration form is asking for my CAS number, what should I do?

You should only be asked to input a CAS number where you have selected ‘Warwick Student Visa’ or 'Warwick Student Temporary Travel Visa' as your visa type.

It is likely therefore you have chosen the incorrect option on the form.

Please return to the visa screen and select ‘short term student’ from the list of available visa options.

Your visa, although issued primarily for the purpose of work, does not prohibit study.

However you need to be sure that you can fulfil your obligations to both work visa sponsor (employer) / business and the University.

If the Home Office judges that you no longer meet the requirements of the visa issued to you for work / business, then action may be taken to cancel your leave.

If you cease to be employed by your sponsor or startup visa cancelled, you will need to switch to a student visa in order to continue your studies.

You may do this from inside the UK if you are registered on a full-time course of study and meet all other student visa application requirements.

You cannot apply for a student visa to study a part-time or distance learning course.

This category does not impose any study or work restrictions and you have no limit on the time you are able to stay in the UK, as long as you meet the general residency requirements of the Home Office.

If you are an EU national (or a family member of an EU national) and hold Permanent Residence in the UK, you will need to apply for Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme before 30 June 2021.

Failure to provide the University with evidence of this permission may result in your withdrawal from the University under Regulation 36.4.2.

This category does not usually prohibit study in the UK, unless you have a ‘no study’ condition on your Bail 201 letter.

If you do not have the Bail 201 letter, the University will contact the UKVI to ascertain that you have the right to study. if you already have the letter, please follow instructions HERELink opens in a new window on how to register on the course.

Should your circumstances change, you may need to apply for a Student visa in your own right. It is not possible to do this from inside the UK so you would need to ensure that time spent overseas obtaining a student visa did not affect your studies.

If you are seeking asylum in the UK, it may take quite a long time for the Home Office to make a decision.

The Student Immigration and Compliance team will contact you for updates during your registration period, and will invite you to give us consent to check progress with the Home Office directly.

As you are a non-EEA national, this visa is linked to the EEA family member on whom you are dependant. If your circumstances change you may no longer have the right to remain in the UK. Examples of changes in circumstance could include (but is not limited to): the person to whom your permit is tied leaves the UK, loses their status due to long absences, or your relationship with them breaks down.

You will usually be allowed to enrol if your visa allows study but does not cover the duration of your course but you should be aware of the following:

• You must always have valid UK immigration status to remain fully registered at Warwick - if your visa lapses and you cannot show you have made a new application for leave which permits study you will be temporarily withdrawn under University Regulation 36.4.2
• If you are required to apply for a student visa from overseas and the application is refused or your return to the UK is delayed causing you to take an unauthorised absence from your course you may be temporarily withdrawn or required to restart at a later date
• If you apply for a student visa from inside the UK and your application is refused, your continued registration will depend on whether you still hold a valid visa which permits study and/or can submit a new visa application before a date specified by the University, or whether an administrative review overturns the refusal and your application for student visa is approved.

If your visa application is currently pending approval by the Home Office you need to be aware that any changes to your course, or your circumstances, will need to be communicated to the Home Office via the University's Immigration and Compliance team and you ensure you keep them up to date with any changes to your circumstances.

Should an in-progress visa application be unsuccessful and you do not hold a visa which permits you to study at Warwick you will be required to withdraw under University regulation 36.4.2. You should notify the Immigration and Compliance team immediately if you become aware that your visa is refused so that they can assist you further.

As soon as the outcome of your application is known you should inform the Immigration and Compliance Team of this so that your record may be updated. You may upload a copy of your new BRP, should you have received it directly, via the Enrolment Dashboard. If the University is receiving your BRP on your behalf we will contact you once this is received to advise you how to book an appointment to come and collect it from us.

It is vital that the University holds up to date evidence of your immigration permission. Failure to provide this may result in your withdrawal from the University under Regulation 36.4.2.

If you are starting:

• a collaborative PhD course (for example, partnership with Monash, or under Eutopia etc.) where you are due to start your PhD with the overseas partner, and will be coming to Warwick at a later date, or,
• a distance learning PhD course where you will spend no more than 12 weeks in the UK across the whole duration of your PhD, or,
• a PhD by Published Work course where you are not required to come to the UK until your viva date
