Once you know (or have decided) that you will start your PhD course at the University of Warwick, you should refer to the 'Alliance Joint PhD Course Information'Link opens in a new window webpage for more information as to how to apply.

You may need to apply for an ATAS certificateLink opens in a new window (this is free of charge) if it is required for the course that you applied for. Your Postgraduate Admissions team will confirm this in their offer email and will provide you with the information you need to apply for ATAS.

Once you have accepted an unconditional offer, about 3-4 months prior to your course start date you will receive an email from the PG Admissions team asking whether you require a CASLink opens in a new window (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies- this is a virtual number that the University will give to you in order for you to apply for a Student Visa to study in the UK).

Please take great care when preparing for your Student visa application to ensure it is successful. If you are in the UK at that time, you may wish to contact student immigration teamLink opens in a new window to help you with the visa application process.

About 6 weeks prior to your course start date, you will receive information about how to prepare for your study at Warwick Link opens in a new window(including how to complete online course registration). You can complete online course registration once you receive your Student visa. You will then need to attend an in-person immigration event with your original passport and visa for verification.

If you start your PhD at Warwick, your CAS will cover the whole duration of your joint PhD. This means you will receive a Student visa which covers the whole duration of your joint PhD + an additional 4 months (to complete examination) + an additional 4 months (given by the UKVI to wrap up your affairs in the UK or to switch to a different UK visa).

You will be required to register with Monash University at the start of your course even if you are not planning to go there for a while. You will receive more information, including how to apply for an Australian visa, in due course.

Once you receive an offer to study the joint PhD, Monash University will pass your information to the University of Warwick Postgraduate Admissions Team. You will not receive an offer letter by email from the University of Warwick.

If your course requires ATAS, you will not need to obtain an ATAS certificate until you need to apply for a visa to come to Warwick (this includes if you are coming to Warwick for a short period).

Within 4-6 weeks to your course start date at Monash, you will receive an email from Warwick inviting you to complete course registration online. You will be asked to enter your passport and visa details and upload a scanned copy of your passport and visa. If you will not come to Warwick for some time, you will not have a UK visa. In this case, please choose 'Exemptions' as 'visa type', and enter 'Monash Warwick joint PhD' in 'visa number'. You will then be able to complete online course registration. It is important that you notify us as soon as you know when you will start your period of study at Warwick (ideally up to 3 months before your intended travel date). You can notify us by completing a webform to request a CAS. Make sure that you choose the correct option as detailed below.

When you receive your CAS, please take great care when preparing for your Student Visa application to ensure that you make a successful application. Your CAS will cover the duration from when you come to study at Warwick to the end of your course + additional 4 months (to complete examination if it will be held at Warwick) + an additional 4 months (given by the UKVI to wrap up your affairs in the UK or to switch to a different UK visa).

If you are coming to Warwick to study as part of the joint PhD programme for a period of 6 months or more, then you will need to apply for a Student VisaLink opens in a new window. As you will have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge Link opens in a new windowwhich is part of the Student visa application process, you will be entitled to free medical treatment in the UK at the same level as UK nationals.

If you are coming to Warwick to study as part of the joint PhD programme for a period of less than 6 months, you may have the option to apply for a Student visa, or a Standard Visitor visa (this can be more convenient and cheaper if you are a non-visa national, for example, if you hold an Australian passport you do not need to apply for a visit visa, you can enter as a visitor using your passport). However, because you are eligible for a Student visa, there may be some disadvantages to choosing a Standard Visitor visa. If you decide that you want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa, you will need to ask your academic department/ supervisor to request a 'Standard Visitor visa supporting letter' Link opens in a new window(staff access only). You will need this letter even if you are a non-visa national and can request entry to the UK on arrival. If your course is subject to ATAS clearance, you will need to obtain an ATAS certificate before you travel as well.

Please also note that if you are in the UK with a 'Standard Visitor' visa, you are not entitled to free hospital treatment and so need private medical insurance. If you receive funding from the Alliance, for example, if the funding covers all the course fees as well as a maintenance grant (money given towards living expenses) in excess of £9207 per year (or £1,023 per month), then it is possible for us to include a statement in your CAS to the effect that you are fully funded, therefore, you are not required to submit financial evidence with your Student visa application.

If this is the case, please make sure that you make it clear on the CAS request form (and upload a copy of the scholarship letter, if you have one), so that we can verify the information and ensure it is included in your CAS.

If you have dependants, it is possible for them to apply for a Student Dependant visa. We have a dedicated Dependant Visa webpage where you can find more information.

If you are mainly based at Monash University and are coming to study at Warwick for short periods only (<6 months) and you decide to study using a Standard Visitor visa, your dependants will need to apply for a visa in their own right (as a visitor, for example). Please be aware that as a 'Visitor', they are not allowed to work in the UK neither entitled to free hospital treatment, so you should arrange for private medical insurance.

Towards the end of your PhD (for example, once you have submitted your thesis), you may be considering looking for a job or starting your own business.

If you hold a valid Student visa at that time, you will be eligible to apply for the Graduate Route visa, which will give you a 3 year visa to work/ look for work in the UK.

Alternatively, if you are considering starting your own business, then the Start Up visa may be the right option for you. Or, If you have found an employer, they may be willing to sponsor you with a Skilled worker visa.
