Boost your English skills and academic confidence before joining the Warwick Summer School with our new Preparatory English programme.

This short, intensive online course is tailored for international students with a place on the Warwick Summer School. It’s the perfect opportunity to refresh your English skills, build confidence in academic communication, and develop essential literacy skills before starting your main programme of study.

This engaging course will help you:

Enhance your English language proficiency through real academic tasks

Develop confidence in academic discussions and deliver compelling presentations

Sharpen your listening skills with authentic university lectures and talks

Expand your academic vocabulary in context

Engage in stimulating seminar-style discussions with an interdisciplinary approach

You’ll work in interactive study groups with peers in a compatible time zone to work, tackling assignments together and participating in thought-provoking discussions. Themes will focus on current issues in social science, encouraging you to explore and share perspectives through your disciplinary lens.

Expect a mix of live online classes, independent study (up to five hours a week), and collaborative learning, all designed to prepare you for success in a UK university environment.

The timetable will be from 09:00-13:30 BST with a second stream running from 13:30-17:30 subject to demand.

Eligibility: There are no entry requirements for this course - the course is open to students aged 18+ joining a Warwick Summer School course from Sunday 13 July - Saturday 2 August 2025.

Course Aims

To develop student’s English language proficiency through authentic academic tasks.

To provide opportunities for students to gain confidence in academic communication skills in the Warwick setting prior to commencing their Summer School.

Delivery

Students must have a laptop to access electronic materials and engage in your lessons. Please note the following technical requirements for the online EAP course:

• a modern laptop (mobile devices such as tablets or phones are not appropriate)

• a headset or headphones (highly recommended) or functioning speakers and a microphone

• a working webcam

• Chrome and Firefox installed

• an internet connection of 20 Mbps or higher We will provide training in using Warwick’s online platforms (e.g. Microsoft Teams) at the start of the course.

Technical support is available during normal UK office hours (09:00-17:00 Monday- Friday)

Assessment

On the final day of the course students will engage in a short group discussion on a lecture topic and submit a reflective portfolio.
