Sustainable Halloween Costume Competition!

Whether you're out or staying home this Halloween, we want to see your Sustainable Halloween Costumes!

Halloween produces a terrifying amount of waste. It’s estimated around 700 million costumes are thrown away every year - producing around 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste. That’s equivalent to 83 million plastic bottles!

As Halloween costumes are intended to be cheap, and single-use, costumes are often manufactured out of cheap non-biodegradable materials. A recent study found around 83% of the materials used in Halloween Costume Pieces were made of oil-based plastic materials. The demand in Halloween Costumes contributes to the demand in oil-production, plastic production, and costumes will end up in landfills where they can take up to 200 years to decompose.

This is why Sustainable Halloween Costumes are so important!

What is a sustainable costume?

A sustainable costume means any costume made without buying things brand new. This can include being made out of recycled materials, things you find in charity shops, or using clothes you already own. Use your imagination and creativity - there’s also some great inspiration online!

This competition is open for all staff and students - most creative costume will win a £20 voucher for online shop Reyousable!
