Moth Survey Recap - July 2024
On the 17th of July, we had our latest moth survey! A huge thank you to Dan Hall, an academic in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, moth enthusiast and Coventry local for leading this survey.
Dan set out two light traps around Windmill Hill. These traps were put out the night before and left over overnight with a light bulb turned on. Moths are attracted to the lights and fly into the humane trap to settle on the egg cartons.
In this survey, we found 174 moths from 47 species - brilliant considering the weather conditions were not ideal! This included six September Thorn, a White Satin moth and a Slender Pug moth. This was a very successful survey, and the abundance of moths suggests good habitat quality. In the UK, there are 2500 species in total, so finding around 47 species in one survey shows the great variety on campus.
