The Big Hog-Friendly Litter Pick Challenge: 2024 results
The university is working hard to address the nature emergency by creating, enhancing and protecting spaces across campus for wildlife. We are a Gold accredited Hedgehog Friendly Campus and undertake numerous projects to improve our spaces not only for hedgehogs, but for a whole host of other species that use these habitats, too.
In 2024 we participated in the nationwide Big Hog-Friendly Litter Pick Challenge for the third year in a row. It ran between 16th September and 29th November and attracted almost twice the number of volunteers nationally compared to last year. This increased level of engagement meant a more fierce competition, but we’re pleased to announce that the University of Warwick still managed to secure a place in the Top 3!
This is a great achievement as it not only confirms our unwavering commitment to a more wildlife-friendly campus, but also shows the fantastic results that can be accomplished when students, staff and communities work together. You can find out more about this year’s results here.
In addition to the Big Hog-Friendly Litter Pick, our regular Wednesday Warwick Wombles litter picks removed an additional 151.7kg of litter from green spaces on campus throughout the year. Being outdoors boosted our volunteers' physical and mental wellbeing, and we got to meet lots of new people from departments all across the university.
Thank you all who participated and congratulations on this brilliant result!
