Veganuary 2023
This January, we are supporting Veganuary!
What is Veganuary?
Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that encourages people worldwide to try vegan for January & beyond!
Last year, more than 629,000 people officially signed-up from nearly every country in the world to participate. Kantar research suggests around 10 times more people usually take part in Veganuary than officially sign-up through the Veganuary website, which means over 6 million people gave vegan eating a try during their 2022 campaign.
Based on calculations from Poore & Nemecek (2018), the impact of two million participants eating vegan for 31 days is:
- 12.4 million litres of water saved
- 207,680 tonnes of CO2 eq saved – the equivalent to 2.4 million flights from London to Paris
Why is diet important?
Every piece of food we eat makes its own impact on the environment. But some foods make much more of an impact than others. The production of meat and dairy takes a huge toll on our planet. Breeding animals for food every year requires massive amounts of natural resources, like fresh water and land, and generates massive amounts of waste and pollution.
The Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) Project at Oxford University studies the health, environmental, social and economic impacts of meat and dairy production and consumption. Their Meat the Future exhibition considers some of the findings and explores future scenarios. Find out more including greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain for various items from beef to bananas and from poultry to peas.
Get involved
Of course, you don’t have to immediately embrace the full vegan lifestyle – you can start by trying vegetarian dishes first and then easing into more vegan recipes or try a selection of vegan items and see which ones you could switch into your routines more easily.
