Yellow Rattle Blossoms: Small Seeds, Big Change
Yellow rattle is often called the meadow maker, and for good reason. This semi-parasitic plant transforms landscapes drawing nutrients from surrounding grasses, reducing their dominance and in turn creating space for a richer variety of plants to thrive. It’s nature’s way of restoring balance, and a powerful reminder that even small changes to habitat management can have big impacts on biodiversity.
Last autumn the Grounds and Garden team prepared the ground and sowed 2kg of yellow rattle seed across the dinosaur field. Establishing this plant is no easy task, which makes the results even more rewarding. Today, we’re delighted to see vibrant yellow blooms across the field with pollinators in abundance. Some of the flowers are already beginning to fade; listen closely and you’ll hear the distinctive ‘rattle’ or ripening seeds. With time many of these will germinate and allow for a great diversity of wildflowers to flourish.
Plans are underway to sow more yellow rattle on the other Spine Route field this autumn as we continue our commitment to create a more biodiverse campus environment.
We invite you to get involved. From taking part in surveys to simply exploring these spaces, there are many ways to connect with and support the wildlife that calls our campus home.
