The Big Butterfly Count
This year the Big Butterfly CountLink opens in a new window is taking place between 18th July and 10th August.
Butterfly Conservation's UK-wide citizen science initiative is the world's biggest butterfly survey. Participating is not only a fun and relaxing exercise, but by doing so we can all contribute to citizen science that is vital to the monitoring of species population trends and in fact the state of environmental health.
Join us to learn about the importance of citizen science and how you can contribute to butterfly monitoring with the iRecord ButterfliesLink opens in a new window app.
You do not need to be an expert on butterflies to join. The format of the activity will be tailored to the participants and may include an informal walk as well as the chance to contribute to the Big Butterfly Count by carrying out a 15-minute survey.
What to expect during this activity:
- introduction to citizen science,
- introduction to iRecord Butterflies (please make sure you download it onto your smartphone or tablet beforehand, internet connection is not essential but is beneficial for using this app); the level of detail will depend on the participants' existing knowledge of the app - beginners are welcome!
- a guided walk or a 15-mins butterfly survey on campus.
Please dress according to the weather as it is an outdoor activity. We may walk in (tall) grass and on rough terrain so please wear suitable footwear and trousers.
The survey is a stationary activity and is suitable for participants with limited mobility who have sufficient butterfly ID skills to undertake the Butterfly Count on their own - please feel free to contact us on sustainability@warwick.ac.uk if you have any questions. If you are planning to do the survey, please download the Big Butterfly Count app or submit your resultsLink opens in a new window on the official website.
Please note that this activity is weather dependent and may be cancelled in adverse weather conditions.
