Harvest mouse nest survey

Earlier this year we confirmed the presence of harvest mice on campus, which is an exciting discovery and a wonderful addition to our knowledge on the biodiversity value of the campus. Harvest mice are fascinating for a number of reasons, including

  • it is the smallest rodent in the UK, weighing no more than a 2p coin!
  • it is the only British mammal with a prehensile tail, which it uses as a 5th limb to hold on to grass stems in its favoured habitat with dense, tall grasses e.g. fields, road verges, hedgerows and reed beds.
  • it creates nests above ground among the slim stalks of vegetation by weaving living leaves of grass and other plants into a tennis ball sized, round structure.
  • harvest mouse population size and range in the UK are most likely grossly underestimated.

They are elusive, nocturnal and tiny, and hardly ever enter small mammal traps or trigger wildlife trail cameras, so it is rare to see them in the wild. Thus, the most prevalent survey technique for this species is by looking for their nests. This is a non-invasive method as the surveys are carried out during the months when the nests are vacant, hereby reducing the disturbance to the animals.

Join us on Sunday 12th October from 10:00 to participate in this unique opportunity to undertake the first ever harvest mouse survey on campus with the help of Warwickshire Mammal GroupLink opens in a new window, who have been supporting our work with small mammal surveysLink opens in a new window since 2023.

The survey will most likely last at least 3-4 hrs but participants can leave earlier if needed, please just notify the activity lead on the day.

The survey will involve carefully inspecting habitats with dense vegetation (including bramble), looking for harvest mouse nests. No prior experience is required as training will be provided by Warwickshire Mammal Group.

The ground will be uneven and possibly somewhat waterlogged so waterproof footwear is essential, as is clothing suitable for being outdoors in potentially chilly and wet weather.

Please ensure you read the relevant pages of the Risk AssessmentLink opens in a new window prior to attending the event.
