Our 2024/25 Savings: Electricity, Heat and Water

Each day the Energy and Sustainability team checks and analyses energy and water data from thousands of meters we have on campus, tackling inefficiencies and spotting potential issues early. These efforts have led to reduced carbon emissions and costs from electricity, heating and water.

For the 2024/25 academic year:

Electricity

We avoided around 555,000 kWh of electricity wastage. That’s enough to:

  • Power 206 average 2–3-bedroom UK homes for a year, or
  • Drive an electric car 57 times around the world.

Even though our grid electricity supply is from 100% renewable supplies, reducing demand matters — every kWh we save can help decarbonise other sectors like heating and transport.

Heating

We prevented around 926,000 kWh of heat wastage. That’s enough to:

  • Heat 80 typical 2–3-bedroom UK homes, or 650 ultra-efficient Passivhaus homes, or
  • Provide 195,000 hot showers.

This avoided 170 tonnes of CO₂ emissions — the emissions from driving a petrol car 1 million kilometres (26 times around the globe!).

Water

By detecting leaks early on, we avoided approximately 7 million litres of water. That’s the same as:

  • 3 Olympic-size swimming pools, or
  • 14.5 million half-litre bottles of water.
