Artist-Researcher Collaborations: Lessons and Challenges

Artist-Researcher Collaborations with Coventry Creates: Sharing knowledge and inspiring innovation

Read a full evaluation of Coventry Creates 2020 and 2021, including details of the benefits and impact delivered to both researchers and artists.

This evaluation document covers Coventry Creates 1 and 2, using data from a series of interviews and feedback surveys conducted over three years. Overall, interviewees from Coventry Creates 2020 and 2021 expressed a positive sentiment towards Coventry Creates and gave fascinating insights into the impacts that the programme had had on them.

In October 2021, a knowledge sharing document was created based on the evaluation of artist-research collaborations through the initial Coventry Creates programme of commissions, together with a roundtable discussion. The roundtable event took place in June 2021 between artists and researchers who had taken part in Coventry Creates collaborations or the Coventry Biennial.

This document shares learning from Coventry Creates, including its benefits and challenges, alongside four case studies to illustrate the experiences of artists and researchers working together for the first time. In setting out our findings, as well as lessons going forward for similar projects, we hope to help promote future successful artist-researcher collaborations - not just around City of Culture, but in all aspects of academic work.
