Jami Rogers on Casting - May 13!

An Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series

go.warwick.ac.uk/shakespeare

Tuesday 13th May 2014, 3.30pm, H3.56

Dr Jami Rogers

Are We Equal Yet?(or 'Casting Black Actors for Donkeys' Years'): An Exploration of Shakespearean Colour-blind Casting Today.

All welcome. Coffee and tea will be served after the seminar.

When David Oyelowo was cast as Henry VI at the RSC, the move was heralded by the media as having shattered the colour barrier once and for all. At the same time, there were blase comments from critics, such as Jeremy Kingston, who claimed that Oyelowo's casting was nothing out of the ordinary because theatre companies had been "casting black actors for donkeys' years". Jami Rogers will explore the state of integrated casting in contemporary British Shakespearean theatre, raising questions about trends in casting policies which both corroborate Kingston's view, whilst simultaneously showing the perception to be inaccurate in terms of the achievement of full equality.
