Reading Session: ‘Comparing David Veevers’ The Origins of the British Empire in Asia and Phillips and Sharman’s Outsourcing Empire’.

We would like to invite you to a Reading Session the week after, Monday, November 23, 1-2:30 pm (Week 8).
In keeping with the theme of the two WIPs this term, we will read the Introductions to two recent books on the topic of European trade companies and empire: David Veevers’s The Origins of the British Empire in Asia, 1600-1750 (Cambridge, 2020) and Phillip Andrew Phillips and J. C. Sharman, Outsourcing Empire: How Company-States Made the Modern World (Princeton, 2020).
David Veevers, a lecturer at the University of London-Queen Mary, will join us for this discussion. If you have the time, we invite you to also read Chapter 5 of his book.
