workshop: Heritage and Alternative Histories

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Graduate Space, 4th floor extension, Humanities building, University of Warwick

NB. Please note change of venue.

Speakers:

  • Tom Freshwater and Nino Strachey (National Trust)
  • Deborah Lamb (Historic England)
  • Kate Smith (University of Birmingham, and co-editor with Prof. Margot Finn of New Paths to Public History, Palgrave 2015)

The workshop's aim is to focus on where the wealth that funded heritage spaces and objects came from (slavery, corruption, colonialism, exploitation etc), and how this information, and debates about it, can best be presented to the public. We will hear overviews but also particular case studies which help illuminate issues, challenges, and policy implications that need to be addressed. We may also identify particular sites/projects where historians and heritage staff might work collaboratively to deepen the visitor experience. You might also like to read this paper by Prof. Mark Knights 'The Cultural Legacy of Corruption' which explores the topic. Please note that access to the paper is restricted to Warwick staff and students and that it is not for wider circulation.

All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
