ABSTRACT
Was there a philosophy of the city, or the commonwealth, in early modern England? Does it even make sense to speak in such terms? This talk looks at the intellectual resources educated Elizabethan authors used to think about the civitas. A special focus will be placed on Aristotle’s Politics and on what one early modern author, the philosopher John Case, tried to do with that text in the context of the Elizabethan commonwealth.
