Pre-requisite: prior knowledge of Korean

  • A1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
  • or GCSE level
  • or equivalent
Main Objectives
  • To understand and communicate in familiar and routine situations, using frequently used expressions;
  • To develop strategies for language learning; and
  • To work towards/achieve A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
Credits

30 CREDITS, also available for 24 CREDITS

Teaching and Learning

One weekly blended session for 21 weeks organised as:

  • 2-hour face-to-face class on campus
  • Some independent study will also be set

If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online. 

Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 30 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 300 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.

Assessment

Term 1: one interim test (10%)

Term 3: one reading/writing test (50%) + one speaking test (40%)

Course Description

The module offers students the opportunity to further develop their communicative competence in Korean.

Students will enhance their skills in vocabulary and expressions, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. For students intending to understand Korean literacy for travel, study, or work placements in Korea, this module will build confidence in communicating with native speakers abroad.

Successful completion of Korean 2 qualifies students to progress to Korean 3.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Use vocabulary and expressions appropriately
  • Communicate on familiar topics and activities
  • Write simple texts, messages and emails using correct language
  • Understand spoken language in the area of immediate personal relevance
  • Understand texts dealing with descriptions of events and feelings
  • Apply a basic knowledge of grammar

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2 Basic user (waystage) of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) or close to that level.

Syllabus

The syllabus will include the following:

Communicative situations

Describing places and people, daily routine; Telling the time and directions; Expressing opinions and personal preferences; Talking about the past and future activities; Panning travel and holidays; Making comparisons

This module, aimed at beginners, will provide an introduction to fundamental features of Korean grammar and essential basic structures, making it possible to function in a range of everyday situations.

Grammar content

Students will learn to form simple sentences with an understanding of basic grammar.

Students will learn to comprehend and form practical sentences used in everyday life.
