- or Langue Centre Korean Beginners Accelerated or Korean 2
- or equivalent
Main Objectives
This module aims to enable students:
- To understand and produce language on topics which are familiar or of personal interest
- To work towards or achieve A2+ standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
- Additionally, students will research, analyse and reflect on cultural contexts, enhancing their cultural knowledge, as well as intercultural and cross-cultural competencies.

Teaching and Learning
Weekly blended sessions for 21 weeks, organised as:

A two-hour face-to face seminar on campus

An one-hour synchronous online seminar on Microsoft Teams
- Four online workshops, each lasting ninety minutes, spread across terms 1 and 2
- Some independent study will also be set
If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online.
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 30 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 300 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.
Assessment
Term 1: Interim test (10%)
Term 3: Reading/writing test (35%) + Speaking test (40%) + Independent project (15%)

Course Description
This module offers students the opportunity to learn and reinforce the basics of the Korean language, while improving their communicative competence. Students will engage in discussions and express their opinions on topics related to everyday life. The module provides deeper insights into Korean society and culture, fostering a critical understanding of cultural contexts. Additionally, students will develop analytical and reflective skills in cross-cultural settings, as well as autonomous learning abilities and effective resource management.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
- Understand texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest
- Engage in oral communication describing situations with relevant details
- Provide reasons and evidence when giving opinions on familiar topics
- Produce text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, using correct characters
- Critically analyse and reflect on cultural contexts, demonstrating enhanced intercultural and cross-cultural competencies
- Conduct and present independent research into Korean culture and society
- Self-monitor and self-regulate their own learning and manage resources
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2+ Basic user (waystage) of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) or close to that level.
Syllabus
This module will allow students to develop strategies for self-directed and autonomous learning, as well as an understanding of diverse cultural contexts and the ability to engage with and communicate on them thoughtfully and respectfully. The syllabus will include the following:
Communicative situations
Describing daily and free time activities - Offering congratulations - Describing the tasks to be done - Asking and giving permission - Explaining holiday and travel plans - Describing routines and habits - Describing the shape/appearance/location of an item - Describing a situation and asking for a favour - Expressing desire, hope and wishes.
Grammar content
The module will reinforce students’ correct usage of basic Korean grammar, such as sentence structure and tenses.
The module will further offer a list of essential particles, adverbs, and conjunctions with examples concerning day-to-day situations.
