Main Objectives
This module aims to enable students:
- To understand ideas in depth and carry out communication accordingly on a range of familiar social topics
- To facilitate students' self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills
- Additionally, students will research, analyse and reflect on cultural contexts, enhancing their cultural knowledge, as well as intercultural and cross-cultural competencies.
- To work towards or achieve B1+ standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)

Teaching and Learning
One weekly blended sessions for 21 weeks consisting of:

Two-hour face-to-face seminar on campus

Four online workshops, each lasting ninety minutes, spread across terms 1 and 2
- Some independent study will also be set
If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online.
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 30 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 300 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.
Assessment
Term 2: portfolio (15%)
Term 3: one reading/writing test (30%) + one speaking test (40%) + one independent project (15%)

Course Description
This module is designed to reinforce and advance students' written and spoken Korean language skills. It provides deeper insights into Korean society and culture while fostering a critical understanding of cultural contexts. Students will also develop analytical and reflective abilities in cross-cultural settings, as well as autonomous learning skills and effective resource management.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
- Understand the main ideas and details of reasonably complex texts on a range of social topics
- Engage in oral communication, describing with details and expressing opinions with justification on a range of social topics, with fluency
- Write a clear, detailed text on a range of social topics explaining viewpoints objectively with appropriate
register, using correct characters - Demonstrate self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills
- Critically analyse and reflect on cultural contexts, demonstrating enhanced intercultural and cross-cultural competencies
- Conduct and present independent research into Korean culture and society
- Self-monitor and self-regulate their own learning and manage resources
By the end of the course, students should become able to perform at B1+ level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) or close to that level.
Syllabus
This module will allow students to develop strategies for self-directed and autonomous learning, as well as an understanding of diverse cultural contexts and the ability to engage with and communicate on them thoughtfully and respectfully. The syllabus will include the following:
Communicative situations
Delivering news/conveying what is heard from another person Requesting a refund for a faulty item Giving and accepting apologies Expressing regrets Expressing opinions with logical reasoning Giving reviews of film/book Describing cultural change in society and reasons Making detailed future plans
Grammar content
The module will consolidate students' correct and sophisticated usage of Korean grammar and further offer a list of grammar points essential to producing the compound-complex sentences.
