Hindi Beginners (LL197)

Summary

Level:

You are a complete beginner, knowing virtually nothing of the language.

Main Objectives

You will develop competence in a range of predictable simple everyday language tasks. The course will introduce you to the Devanagari, Hindi script system, and a very basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language.

This course will allow you to:

  • take your first steps in recognising and writing the Devanagari, Hindi script system
  • develop foundational skills in reading and writing basic text in Hindi
  • develop foundational skills in understanding and speaking Hindi
  • develop an understanding of Indian culture through the use of Hindi

Teaching and Learning

Teaching will be delivered fully online on MS Teams.

There will be one weekly two-hour online session for 18 weeks.

Course Text

The following will be provided at the start of the course:

  • An electronic Course Book with structured weekly sessions that include classwork and homework sheets.
  • A Hindi Devanagari Poster

Course Description

The course is divided into learning blocks each of which focuses on practical, useful and manageable language. You will be taught between 3-6 Hindi script letters each week and taught how to recognise and write these. You will be given access to online resources for more independent learning. Homework tasks and practice activities will be set each week to consolidate what you have learnt in class and help you retain new language. Each live session starts with the revision of the previous week learning. By completing this course, you will be able to understand the meaning of up to 250 words, and to read and write in Hindi.

The choice of Hindi words learnt will help you understand Hindi language used in day-to-day living.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • understand the Devanagari, Hindi script system, including all vowels, consonants, half script letters and marks, and how they are pronounced
  • write Hindi characters and use them to formulate words
  • read and comprehend short text in Hindi
  • understand basic spoken Hindi words and use them in basic conversation
  • make basic introductions and use basic greetings
  • gain an understanding of key cultural aspects of Hindi contextualised by the vocabulary learnt and related to traditions, festivals, and different etiquettes.

 

Syllabus

This course will cover fundamental grammar rules and the following topics:

  • the Devanagari, Hindi writing script
  • greeting and introducing yourself and others
  • asking and giving personal basic information
  • ordering food and drink at a restaurant/cafĂ©
  • describing things using colours
  • expressing likes and dislikes
  • using numbers 0-20

  • Communicating appropriately and respectfully in written and spoken Hindi
  • Intercultural Awareness, Digital Literacy, Teamwork, Problem-Solving
