Pre-requisite: Prior knowledge of Chinese
- Successful completion of Language Centre Chinese 5 equivalent module
- A B2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
- One year or more of intensive study or work in the native speaking countries
- A good A level or equivalent + 1 year of further study
Main Objectives
- To develop linguistic competence in accomplishing a broad range of complex and non-routine tasks across a wide and often unpredictable variety of contexts;
- To increase intercultural and social awareness essential to practical communication in doing business in/with the Chinese community of the world.

To understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts for social, academic and professional purposes.

To produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects

To work towards C1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
Credits
This 15 CREDIT module is also available for 12 CREDITS.
Teaching and Learning
One weekly session for 9 weeks, organised as:
- One weekly two-hour face-to-face class delivered on campus
- Some independent study will also be set
Students will take part in an online exchange with a university in China.
If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online.
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 15 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 150 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.

Course Description
This module will focus on improving the following:
- Further developing communicative competence of Chinese to a higher level
- Improving fluency and accuracy in both oral and written performances in professional settings.
- Developing more advanced reading and writing techniques (simplified Chinese characters will be taught and assessed)
- Gaining more insights into Chinese Business, Politics and international relations
Successful completion of Chinese 6 qualifies students to progress to Chinese for Translation and Cultural Communication.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Communicate orally in Chinese with developed accuracy and fluency in a range of predictable and unpredictable professional contexts.
- Gather information from authentic texts on a variety of formal genres.
- Use their enhanced knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, syntax and register to produce reasonably long essays or reports.
- Increase intercultural knowledge and understanding of the Chinese-speaking community.
By the end of the module, students should also be able to achieve B2+/C1 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

Topics
This module covers topics such as globalisation and localisation, China's international relations with different countries, issues in international business, economic development, and contemporary Chinese society.
Grammar/syntax/lexis
This module covers items such as complex and compound sentences and structures, formal vocabulary and terminology, set phrases and collocations.
