Chinese Calligraphy (LL002)

Summary

Level:

You are a beginner or near beginner in Chinese calligraphy. Students can take the course with or without knowing the Chinese language, as Chinese characters are sourced from pictographs.

Main Objectives:

Calligraphy combines the literary component of text with the visual elements of art. This course aims to introduce the students to the practice of Chinese calligraphy and culture. Students will not only develop their calligraphy skills but also gain a deeper appreciation for the art and culture of China, while understanding the structure of Chinese characters and their meanings.

Teaching:

Teaching will be delivered in person.

One weekly two-hour in-person session for 8 weeks.

Course Text (must be bought by students)

Materials will be designed by class teacher. But students can buy some calligraphy ink, brushes and paper to practice. Here are the recommended amazon links to buy the materials:

Course Description

Students will engage in hands-on practice with guided exercises to improve their skills and confidence.

Homework tasks will be set each week to consolidate what you have learnt in class.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • gain some insights into the cultural and philosophical aspects of Chinese calligraphy, and how it reflects Chinese aesthetics and values.
  • master the fundamental strokes and brush techniques essential for creating beautiful characters.
  • gain some knowledge about the structure and composition of Chinese characters, including the balance and harmony required in calligraphy.
  • produce calligraphy work using Chinese ink and rice paper
