The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was the defining event of Spain's history and one of the seminal events of the 20th century. How to remember it remains contentious and, to this day, there is no bricks-and-mortar museum dedicated to the conflict, although there are plans to create one in Teruel. Spanish Civil War: A Virtual Museum (www.vscw.ca) is an interdisciplinary digital humanities project to create a ‘memory institution’ to the war in a virtual space that both counters the absence of a bricks-and-mortar museum and innovates by exhibiting and discussing artefacts held in a range of museums, archives, and libraries in Spain and many other countries. Since its launch in September 2022, this bilingual English-Spanish site has attracted almost 50,000 visitors and received considerable attention in the media. It has also become a major resource for secondary and post-secondary educators who address the Spanish Civil War in their curriculum.
