Getting to Venice

Flying to Venice

The nearest airport to Venice is Marco Polo (about 5 km from Venice). The next closest airport to Venice is Treviso (about 30 km from Venice). Many airlines now fly direct from airports in the UK to Venice or Treviso, including:

There are 3 budget airlines that fly to the Venice or Treviso:

  • Easyjet flies from Bristol, Gatwick and Nottingham East Midlands to Marco Polo.
  • Ryanair flies from Dublin, Liverpool, Luton and Stansted to Treviso.
  • Thompson flies from Manchester and Gatwick to Marco Polo.

When booking your flight, please bear in mind that you need to be in Venice by the Sunday before the start of the Spring Term. Since it is not reasonable to expect your landlord/lady to meet you after 7pm, you should book a flight that lands before 3pm in the afternoon: you will need at least 2 hours from your arrival time to get to your flat, factoring in passport control, baggage collection, customs, journey time to Venice and then to your flat. You MUST stay in Venice until the Friday of Week 10.

Excess Baggage

Most airlines are very strict about the weight of checked baggage, and charge for excess. Current Checked Baggage Allowances are as follows, but please note what the limit is when you buy your ticket:

  • Easyjet: 20kg per person excess charge = £ 5.00 or € 7.50 per kilo.
  • Ryanair: 20kg per person excess charge = £ 5.00 or € 7.00 per kilo.
  • Thompson: 25kg per person excess charge = £ 6.00 or € 9.00 per kilo. Your Venice Pack contains an Excess Baggage Letter explaining that you are obliged to be away for 10 weeks: this may help reduce the charges, but the airline is not obliged to do this — so try to pack as lightly as possible! No airline will accept an individual piece of baggage exceeding 32 kilos. You are normally only allowed one piece of hand baggage (5 kilos).
