About

I am a second year PhD researcher on Media and Communication in the Centre of Cultural and Media Policy Studies. I have been awarded a University of Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship.

I have a MPhil in Media Studies from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. I also have a Masters in International Journalism, completed with Distinction, from City, University of London. My dissertation: The Challenges of Scientific and Environmental Journalism: The Second-generation Biofuels was published as a book. During the MA, I was sponsored by the European Union Programme AlBan.

Research interests

I am interested in investigating how the Brazilian media has covered key aspects of sustainable development and what kind of angles the coverage has taken when discussing the issues.

This is an important topic of study at present as environmental concerns are increasingly prominent worldwide, as their effects relate to climate change, global warming and the increasing emission of greenhouse gases.

Brazil hosted the 1992 and 2012 UN conferences to discuss sustainability. These events amplified the debate on environmental issues and sustainable development in Brazil, a country that holds a high quantity of biodiversity and several natural resources, including 60% of the Amazon rainforest, which is the most important biome in South America, representing over half of the remaining rainforests in the world. The country is also among the global leaders on the production of renewable energy, as wind power, hydropower and biofuels.

Thus, the study will focus on the Brazilian environmental coverage and its evolution within the timeframe of the United Nations conferences held in Brazil in 1992 and in 2012.

I am being supervised by Dr. Pietari Kaapa.
