Studentship Application Information

University of Warwick/Leverhulme Trust Research Project: Performing memory: theatricalising identity in contemporary South Africa.

Applications are invited for a three-year full-time PhD studentship, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, to be based in the Department of Theatre & Performance Studies at the University of Warwick, associated with a parallel PhD studentship at the Ferguson Centre, Open University (see separate advert). The student will define his/ her own focus for the PhD research within the parameters of the overall project, in consultation with the project leaders. The project aims to explore how South Africa is constructing new identities in the ‘post-apartheid’ era through a variety of performative practices, including oral and written narratives, plays, exhibitions, installations, memorials, and other kinds of performances. Candidates will be interested in exploring the role of personal and collective memories in various performative processes, including but not limited to theatre.

The studentship will involve a three-year residence in the UK, with one funded research trip to South Africa. It is expected that the candidate will work alongside the associated PhD candidate supervised at the Open University.

Applicants should hold a good first degree from any university, with relevant MA studies completed or close to completion, and should be from Southern Africa and competent in both English and at least one other language commonly spoken in South Africa, and have a detailed knowledge and direct experience of South Africa in the post-Apartheid context.

The studentship will pay all tuition fees (at UK/EU rates) and will provide a maintenance grant of £13,290 in the first year, rising to £13,650 in the second year and £14,020 in the third.

Potential applicants should review the outline of the larger project, which is available at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/theatre_s/staff/dr_yvette_hutchison/performing_memory/.
