Biography

Jamie joined Design Studies on a part time basis in February 2024. Jamie holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and was previously a Lecturer in Human Factors at Imperial College London and visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art.

Most recently Jamie has worked in charities developing services based on the needs of the communities they support. The services Jamie has developed have ranged from £2.45million place-based employment projects in rural locations through to technology-based mobile sensory units for people with learning disabilities and autism.

Jamie splits his role in Design Studies with a senior role at national charity, SJOG.

Teaching

Jamie has taught design and human factors to undergraduate and post postgraduate students at the University of Warwick, Imperial College London, and the Royal College of Art. He has supervised and examined PhD thesis in automative sound quality and design for behaviour change.

Jamie brings professional practice to teaching and uses real world examples and scenarios for students to apply learning.

For the 2024/2025 academic year he leads:

  • DI102 Introduction to Design Practice
  • DI104 Service Design with UX for Social Impact

Research

Jamie’s research interests explore how people experience their surroundings and how this understanding can be used to develop services, systems, and environments that benefit communities that use them. A particular focus is on design that benefits health and wellbeing, healthcare service design, and soundscapes.

His research has been published in a wide variety of academic journals including engineering, psychology, human factors, and design.

Along with academic journals he has co-authored books on design for behaviour change, and leadership and change management in the charity sector.
