Database of Southern Charitable Societies
The database of charitable societies currently holds entries for more than four hundred and fifty institutions.
The information about each society varies widely. Those institutions with substantial surviving records have much fuller entries than those without, for example.
The database has been organised so that users can either find information about a specific society, or about societies in a specific place or state, or about a type of society.
Very useful appendicies that list charitable societies in the South can be found in the dissertations of John Christie Dann and Gail S. Murray (see the bibliography for full citations). This current database brings those two sources together and adds to them considerably, both in terms of chronological range and geographic spread.
The database is naturally an ongoing project, and is being added to all the time. If you have information about a society that is not included in the database then please tell us about it by emailing t.j.lockley@warwick.ac.uk
