Students as film makers: Embedding skills development into assessment design
Workshop led by Karen Simecek SFHEA, Senior Teaching Fellow and Director of Student Experience and Progression (DSEP) Department of Philosophy, University of Warwick.
How do we ensure students engage thoroughly with the materials we introduce them to and how do we promote creativity in thinking? Is the essay the only way of developing and assessing students’ skills? In this session, we will consider the video presentation and how it can be used to develop skills for employability and help students get more out of the learning experience. Requiring students to think more carefully about how they will make the most of audio-visual features in the presentation of their ideas helps them to take up a new perspective on the material, see new connections and reflect more deeply on how they are communicating these ideas to an unknown audience. As part of this session, you will get practical advice on how to design a similar assignment, including producing student friendly briefs, equipment and software you can use, marking and overcoming key challenges. You will also get to see some examples of student-produced video presentations, and reflect on how you might incorporate a similar assignment into your own modules.
