Cultivate's Evaluating Teaching and Learning in HE Forum

What is Cultivate?

Cultivate is hosted by the Academic Development Centre at the University of Warwick. It is an open access series of events and resources to support learning, teaching and assessment that caters to all experience levels, ranging from early career academics to those leading modules and programmes. Cultivate supports sector-wide community explorations of all things related to HE teaching, learning and assessment. As well as supporting individual professional learning, Cultivate provides a platform for colleagues to share their work and connect with wide and diverse communities.

What is the Evaluating Teaching and Learning in HE Forum?

We are delighted to announce the launch of Cultivate’s Evaluating Teaching and Learning Forum. This forum is open to colleagues across the HE sector and will provide space and opportunities to share and discuss evaluation practices in the HE setting. These practices might include evaluation of student learning, teaching practices and approaches, interventions and initiatives, educational development activities, course/module evaluation, etc.

The specific aims of the forum are to:
  • enhance expertise in evaluating teaching and learning in HE;
  • explore different ways of thinking about and doing evaluation;
  • enable colleagues to connect and identify collaboration opportunities.

The forum will be hosted online, with the possibility of some in-person events. There will be at least three meetings per academic year.

2024/25 Term 1 Forum - Evaluating with students

The Term 1 forum took place on Wednesday 13th November 2024, 1pm - 1.50pm.

We welcomed the following speakers:

  • Hiral Patel and Fiona Duggan, Cardiff University, shared their experiences of participatory evaluation approaches with students. From their ongoing research project on social learning spaces, they will share experiences using visual methods of collaging and collective drawing as alternative approaches to evaluating campus spaces with students.
  • Evan Dickerson and Joy Amuno, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, discussed their experiences of gathering students' views to evaluate digital learning provision.
  • Joris de Henau and Elizabeth Rahman, University of Oxford, shared their experiences as part of the evaluation team for on-course support of using participatory methods and mixed-methods approaches to understand student experiences in general, with a focus on underrepresented groups, and in the evaluation of academic support interventions.
