Cultivate funding

Bid for up to £100 to attend a teaching and learning-focused event

Cultivate funding allows you to bid for up to £100 to attend a teaching and learning-focused event that will benefit your professional development. Bids are welcomed from members of staff who teach and/or support student learning. Please note this fund is not available to postgraduate research students.

Teaching and learning-focused events may include conferences, network meetings, workshops, training sessions, etc. Funding may be used for registration costs, travel and/or subsistence expenses, etc. (travel arrangements and expense claims must comply with University regulations). In exchange for receiving funds, you will be expected to share the learning you gain with relevant others (e.g., department colleagues). The funds must be spent before the end of the financial year in which they are awarded.

Please note you can only receive support from this fund once per academic year.

How will applications be judged?

Applications will be checked by the Cultivate Team to confirm the funding will be used in line with the purpose of the scheme, and then awards are made on a first come first serve basis. We will close to new applications until the start of the following term once the fund for that term has been allocated. We will open a new call at the start of each term.

We aim to get back to you within 2 weeks of submitting an application.

Term one call open

The term one call is now open and will remain open until the budget for this term has been spent. Awards are made on a first come, first serve basis (as long as the application demonstrates alignment to the purpose of the scheme) so there is no specific deadline - you may submit an application at any time.

There is no restriction on when your teaching or learning-focused event takes place vs which termly fund you apply for (for example you can apply in October for an event happening in July), but you must spend the allocated funds by 31st July 2025.

To apply, all you will need to do is complete this short application form (you can view a full copy of the form here).

If your application is approved, the funds will be transferred to the University cost code indicated on your application. Please note that an application will not be processed if it does not include a relevant cost code.

Support to find relevant HE teaching and learning events

This short video (8:20mins) introduces a range of non-discipline specific HE organisations, networks and sector bodies that offer various teaching and learning events. Many of these groups also offer access to useful resources and opportunities to connect with colleagues across the sector.

Have a quick watch if you need any help in finding relevant events (the powerpoint slides used in the video can be downloaded here). Kerry Dobbins will also be happy to provide further help if needed.
