Background
I have a BSc in Chemistry from Belgium and an MA in Science and Technology Studies (STS) from Austria. Before, in between, and after, a diverse set of professional positions informed my next pursuit; going from the self-confidence-building experience of working as a management assistant at a law firm, to the research-fondness-affirming experience of working as an STS research assistant in Thailand.
Research
PhD Working title: How does fact-checking articulate facts? A comparative study in the UK and Southeast Asia
Research topic: Fact-checking is a media practice that very recently became a public knowledge production practice. Comparing with historically established homologs, such as Science or Religion, fact-checking remains little publicly understood: one can easily imagine a scientist in a laboratory or a religious scribe of the Middle Ages but has a harder time imagining a fact-checker at work. What do fact-checkers do? By looking at how fact-checkers articulate facts, my research will contribute to understanding recent shifts in what constitutes public knowledge. Moreover, as a global movement operating in different media settings, I will engage in comparative ethnographic fieldwork in the UK and Southeast Asia, therewith continuing my earlier research on fact-checking in Southeast Asia.
