Siddharth de Souza (Assistant Professor)

Academic profile

I am Assistant Professor in AI and Society at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) and joined the department in January 2025. Prior to joining CIM, I worked as a post doctoral researcher at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society as part of the Global Data Justice Project, a research group which examined how to govern data and technology from a social justice standpoint.

I have worked with the United Nations Development Programme as a consultant on Data Exchange Systems, and have worked with the International Development Law Organization as a Digital Policy Consultant on examining Digital Innovations from a Rule of Law perspective. I am also the founder of Justice Adda, a law and design social venture which seeks to build legal literacy and awareness in India.

I completed my PhD from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where I studied how rule of law indicators needs to be reimagined in contexts and countries in the Global Majority and it is published as a monograph titled Designing Indicators for a Plural Legal World. I have studied law at the University of Cambridge and at the University of Delhi and was previously a German Chancellor Fellow at the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and Rule of Law, Heidelberg and a Judicial Clerk at the High Court of Delhi.

Research

My research interests include studying developments in law and technology from a legal pluralist, data justice, and decolonial perspective. My work explores how data is governed globally in contested, and plural settings and I am interested in examining the role that civil society, and social movements play in shaping data governance and data law frameworks.

I am particularly interested in studying how barriers to access to justice emerge in people's everyday interactions with the law, and through my research and practice, I am interested in exploring pathways to overcome these barriers, through co-designed interventions.

My current projects are on topics around Digital Public Infrastructure, AI Governance, and Law and Design.

Teaching

At CIM, I teach IM961: Global Digital Health and Human Rights.
