“If it hasn't already been asked I would suggest approaching my former employer, Dstl (the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) as the organisation treats chartered status and the respective institutes as a career priority for its employees. I believe the Mathematical Science COP (Community of Practice - government term...) point of contact would be a lady called Ann Steptoe - unsure of title but assuming PhD.

1) LMS: Martin Hyland, one of the heads of dept here, has been very helpful with securing our LMS grants in the past, and I *think* there may have been mention that they could perhaps start regularly funding this. 2) IMA: Peter Rowlett came along to YRM 2009 and was v positive about the whole thing. Similarly Norman and Mariano went to an IMA event last year where again they seemed keen. Maybe with them it's a matter of talking to the people who are keen on this kind of thing! (I have spoken to David Abrahams, (retiring IMA president) and IMA executive director David Youdan and others who have all been enthusiastic about YRM. Just the awards body to convince.!) MJB
3) Winton offered us £6,000 when we asked for £4,000 so they may well be happy to up it this year, if needed. But it is reassuring to have a range of sponsors (and some academic ones).
4) EPSRC were a bit more cautious this year, and in particular wanted to see lots of Applied speakers attending before committing. The contact there was David Harman. There are of course other research councils who we haven't contacted formally I don't think (although Rachel did you look into STFC?) MJB Action Steven
16/06/2010: Meeting with Monica
Paul, Steven & Martine met with Monica (Complexity Admin) to discuss funding options and various practicalities. Monica spent an hour with us and provided very good quality advice as well as taking on various tasks for us, and we extend our gratitude to her. Summary below:
Whilst fenced funding is less useful than general funding, fenced funding releases general funding for other uses.
Cost Code Monica will set up a (Physics) cost code especially for the event for Steven to access. This will take a few days. Monica & Steven to meet next Wednesday.

EPSRC may like to fund specific groups, speakers etc. Contact the person from last time and find out what the priorities are. Martine to find out contact name and pass to Steven.
Roberts funding is part of the Skills Programme (of the Roberts report / transferable skills (in)fame) Monica does not know who currently is the postholder. Martine went to a Roberts funded event on Tuesday and will ask the organiser.
Institute for Advanced Study:
We will need a strong case to win funding from here. Frances (Martine's supervisor) has been successful. ask her advice

18/06/2010 Frances advises our best chance of funding from this source is to have an academic give talks (the same talk) in the IAS or other departments within the University, so that he / she becomes a resource for the whole organisation. Their priority is interdisciplinarity and activities which lead to further research. They have Cryfield house and may house the academics there for us; it would be a marginal cost for them if they were otherwise going to stand empty. They have also probably allocated the money for last year, but it’s worth a try. Public engagement is a high priority for the University, so someone like David Spiegelhalter talking to the IAS about the public understanding of science would be the right sort of thing. (He spoke at BPIII (YRM) in 2009). Discuss at next meeting. Action: All
Research Development Fund:
Colm commented that these have funding they need to spend before the end of July, which we could use to pay for the accommodation we have booked. Need to find out what their target is and see if we fit. Urgent. emailed 17/06/2010 for details of Development Awards which are tied to the vision 2015 strategy “We intend to make Warwick an undisputed world leader in research and scholarship”, which includes things like research excellence
Strategic Fund is unlikely as Maths is not included.
Women in Science Monica has seen a poster for a chemical company who sponsor women attending research events. Investigate. Action ?

Maths & Complexity
Monica will speak to Nav and see if he and she can come up with some sponsorship. Possibly in the form of paying the fees of local students to attend. Complexity may be able to sponsor a keynote speaker for the Complexity track.
Monica suggested approaching Warwick Print to sponsor the booklet, and commented that it may be cheaper to order 250 than 200. They could be asked to sponsor the hard-copy posters, too. (mostly these were sent out as pdf for recipients to print, but there are some who don’t have colour print facility.)
Xpress CD did the CDs of the abstract for ECCS09 for less than £1 each, including the printing, and turned around the material they were given, the sample for approval and then the delivery in less than a week!

Institute of Physics:
are keen on young researcher events. Perhaps talk to Robin about what Physics Warwick does that would fit with the event based on previous years’ tracks and talks.09/07/2010 at Robert MacKay’s suggestion emailed Prof Tom Mullin at Manchester who is chair of nonlinear and complex physics. He has already agreed to come and give the local IMA branch a talk next Feb., and we had already been in contact about that.

The Nonlinear and Complex Physics Group has partly sponsored meetings on 'complexity' in the past few years. Our total budget is small and hence we can only offer ~£100 to £200 per event. I can put it to our committee if this is the kind of sums you had in mind. They are sure to ask how many IOP members will be involved and it would be helpful to know this.

Pens and paper for the conference packs can be obtained from the Communications office (alternatively another sponsor may provide them). There were grumbles about the lack of pens and paper provided last year. They may also advertise the event on U-Tunes.
Conference packs: Rootes reception will provide campus maps for the conference packs. These could also have Coventry city centre tourist maps, other sites of interest and current bus timetables. If contacted in time the Arts centre may be able to put on a tour of the art on campus, or a ‘maths’ themed event

General Funding applications:
Robin Ball advised that in order to make successful funding bids it is necessary to find out what the funding bodies' priorities are and show how the funding meets those criteria. We should have very clear aims (aspirational) and objectives (measurable), and clearly identify our target delegate audience.
Support for students from small departments:
The idea of giving special support to students from small postgraduate communities is a good one especially if we can aim to reduce isolation year-round for them by proposing some interim meetings as suggested by Marjorie Bachelor at Cambridge (who had experience of this and has offered to share her expertise with us on that; email 28/04/2010). The HEFCE HERO database may give is the department size we need. I have had a look and can't find it, but I did locate a list of all the addresses of HEFCE funded universities for our advertising. http://www.hefce.ac.uk/unicoll/HE/
Use the history to show any 'output' which can be measured against the objectives: collaborations and publications are the obvious ones. 'Letters of support' from insitiutions who sent students who benfited are very useful.
