Feedback from track chairs (collected after event):

Track Approx number of people in student talks Approx nuymber in Keynote talk Other comments
Math Bio 10-20 30-40 perhaps we should look to having fewer but broader track types ? This might be a problem due to the time we have and the number of talks there are, but would allow people to see more.
Combinatorics 30-40 60-70
Number theory 20-50 80-100
I think the whole thing was organised very well, and I particularly think that the timetables were very well put together; it was always very clear who was talking about what, when and where, it was clear when the talks ended as well as their start times, and all the information was together ~ the timetables for the BMC were far far more confusing!!
Analysis and PDEs 15 40 The only comment I can think of is that everybody gave a projector presentation which was surprising in analysis track. It probably was the case in all the other tracks. The remote thingy, pointers and such were in short supply. It would be much smoother if there were more projector-related gadgets at hand.
Diff Geom 10-15 30 None. Everything was smooth :)
Algebraic geom 15 30
Maths Phys 20 30 I can't think of anything that could have been done better.
Stats and Porbability   80
Finanaicl Maths 5-25 50-60 It was not clear why some speakers chose this track - their talks did not seem appropriate. A few talks were v poorly attended.

David & Sara are in charge of track chairs.

I have added a column to the `confirmed speakers' page (keynotes) for the relevant track chair, to fill in.DH

Training Session - things to include

  • Make sure they know how to operate projectors and connect laptops / Macs.
  • Load talks up onto computers before session starts and check they work ok
  • Write short introduction for keynote - name, affiliation + maybe previous affiliations, research area, notable awards, talk title
  • Generally look after the keynote speaker
  • Keep track of number of coffee breaks/meals your keynote attends (for funding reasons)
  • Strict timing + explain 5 minute gap between talks
  • chairing own talk, or not

Unconfirmed

DH Robert Tang has voulanteered to do whatever we need, this can include chairing; I will talk to him nearer the time about which track

DH Nicholas Korpelainen has offered to chair combinatorics.

DH Damon McDougal offered to chair a Data Assimilation session, and has an idea for a speaker. I will talk to him about how this might fit in to what we have so far/ how many people it might attract.

DH Matt Reynolds has provisionally offered to chair algebra, ask him nearer the time.

MJB Jamie luo, Daniel Peavoy and Quentin Caudron have offered to chair tracks. All are from Complexity but Quentin has expressed interest in a mathematical biology track, and Daniel's PhD is in climate modelling / statistics

Discussion & Progress

Sent an email around.
Hmmm, no replies yet (3 weeks later).
People I have spoken to are generally happy to help, but not keen to commit that far in advance. This seems reasonable to me, I think we will just have to get on with booking speakers once rooms are confirmed and look for chairs nearer the time. The fact that we don't yet know what sessions we want chaired doesn't help.

DH
Track chairs need to be recruited to suggest and invite to be plenary speakers within the track topics (maybe more than one).
