January eBulletin

The future structure and disciplinary focus of the Higher Education Academy is still not clear and Subject Centres may be undertaking some continuation work after August 2011. We will keep you up to date with information as we receive it. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend our Annual Conference this year (details below) to participate in discussions about the future.

For this current year we have an exciting programme of events, publications and activities planned. Important events include a free workshop on external examining which aims to bring together experienced external examiners and those who may be contemplating external examining for the first time. A speaker from Universities UK will also share the findings of the recent review on external examining. We are also supporting the ninetieth anniversary of the first PhD to be awarded in History by providing funding for a conference organised by the Institute of Historical Research in London.

Finally, we have two new ePublications out this month, Bringing the Outside in and Public History in UK Higher Education, both of which provide a selection of case studies on history beyond the lecture hall.

Oral History

Oral History

By Graham Smith

Few studies have been made exploring the use of oral history in higher education. This in part results from professional historians’ past ambivalence towards it: ambivalence conceived by the coupling of a fixation with the written document and a misunderstanding of what oral history is about. This guide seeks to address some of this by suggesting how modern approaches to oral history, that are complex and challenging, could be used to contribute towards the broader aim of teaching history.
