Habitability in the Universe
Assessment
The Habitability in the Universe assessment has two parts: a written piece and a presentation. In both students have the chance to explore a self-chosen topic in depth, expressing that topic in a wide variety of ways. Possibilities can include an analytical essay, a critical review of literature or film, or even short stories accompanied by appropriate analysis. In the presentations groups have the opportunity to communicate their topic to the cohort; past examples have included teaching-style presentations and a ‘choose-you-own-path’ narrative exploring planetary colonisation.
Both assessment pieces allow students to investigate topics of their choice, and demonstrate their learning by incorporating views and analysis from different disciplines. Varying perspectives and views are brought together to give an overall view of aspects of habitability. The choice of both topic and expression, within the loose constraints of a written piece and presentation, give great flexibility and make the assessment fun, varied and (we hope!) enjoyable.
