Attending MIUA 2024

After attending the 28th Conference on Medical Imaging and Analysis (MIUA 2024) in July, I was refreshed to learn about up-and-coming research in medical imaging. It was a collage of brilliant ideas and contributions to the different realms of medical imaging, including brain, dental bone, endoscopy, cardiac, whole slide imaging, and more.

After a train journey trip to Manchester, followed by a walk to Manchester Metropolitan University, where the conference is hosted, I felt the lively bustle of the city and the energetic vibe that comes from a long, sunny day.

The first day included two oral sessions and a poster session focusing on brain imaging and computational models. The second day featured a special session organised by TIA and chaired by our very own Adam and Simon from Histofy. The session featured excellent oral presentations and power pitches from our centre and various institutions that spanned topics from streamlining AI pipelines, image segmentation and registration, to interesting development in algorithms and models. The session was well steered and audience questions were curious and stimulating. I particularly liked Histofy’s talk on interpretable AI for colon cancer screening. Also, a shoutout to Adith Jeyasangar (pictured), who led a paper accepted at MIUA and co-authored by Shan and me. He delivered an apt power pitch and an excellent poster presentation on an optimised WSI registration pipeline.

Afterwards, I attended the poster session had the most fun engaging and exchanging ideas with various researchers. The session, partly focused on digital pathology, was buzzing with curious energy and interesting discussions. Adam and I had a stimulating discussion with our own Srijay on his work on breast cancer WSI image segmentation using spatially adaptive normalisation.

The third day was shorter and featured an oral session on domain generalisation, and a poster session on dermatology, cardiac imaging along with other modalities. All in all, I have enjoyed being a part of MIUA 2024, where I have learned about what’s new in medical imaging and connected with my peers.
