TIA Centre Celebrates Double Success at WPCCS 2024
We are delighted to announce that two members of the TIA Centre, George Wright and Ethar Alzaid, have been honoured with “Presentation of the Session” awards at the 2024 Warwick Postgraduate Colloquium in Computer Science (WPCCS).
George received the award in the Machine Learning session for his presentation titled “Machine Learning for Histological Assessment of Pregnancy Loss Risk.” His presentation showcased cutting-edge machine learning techniques applied to processing endometrial histological data including the segmentation of glands and cells. The work also explored the prediction of 13 key genes associated with timing and pregnancy loss risk, directly from over 3,300 CD56-stained whole slide images. This approach reduces reliance on costly molecular assays while enabling deeper spatio-molecular and temporal profiling.
Ethar received her award in the Computational Biology and Pathology session for her presentation, “Large multimodal model-based standardisation of pathology reports with confidence and its prognostic significance.” She introduced a practical framework that leverages large multimodal models to automatically extract structured information from unstructured or scanned pathology reports. By employing context-aware prompting strategies, Ethar’s method accurately extracts critical fields such as grade and size, assigning confidence scores to each extraction to ensure reliability. This allows for the generation of standardised pathology reports that comply with national guidelines, in both human- and machine-readable formats. Importantly, the extracted data also demonstrated strong prognostic value.
These awards highlight the innovative research and excellence emerging from the Tissue Image Analytics Centre. The Centre congratulates George Wright and Ethar Alzaid for their outstanding contributions and for representing Warwick’s commitment to research excellence.
