Viva Success for TIA Researcher
We are delighted to announce that one of the TIA Centre’s PhD students, Mostafa Jahanifar, has officially defended their PhD viva this week - congratulation Mostafa!
Mostafa’s research, titled "Revisiting the Mitosis Quantification in Cancer in the AI Era", explores how artificial intelligence can improve the detection and analysis of cell division (mitosis) in cancer tissues; a key factor in tumour grading and prognosis. Traditionally, pathologists manually count mitotic cells under a microscope, a time-consuming and subjective process. Mostafa’s work tackles this challenge by developing cutting-edge AI tools that automate mitosis detection with high accuracy, even across diverse datasets. His methods won international competitions and were applied to over 9,000 cancer samples, revealing new insights into how patterns of cell division influence tumour behaviour and patient outcomes. This research paves the way for more precise cancer diagnostics and AI-driven pathology in the future.
We were also pleased and grateful to welcome Prof Spyridon Bakas from the Indiana University School of Medicine as the external examiner. Prof Bakas also delivered a fantastic seminar talk during his visit. For more details, see the seminar series webpage.
